The Story of General Gordon TREDITION CLASSICS Jeanie Lang 9783849148362 Books

The book had some interesting insight, but was much too short in length and research. Major General Charles George "Chinese" Gordon was born 1-28-1833, in Woolwich, London, and died 1-26-1885. He was the son of Major General Henry William Gordon. Both father and son are suspected of having suffered a form of autism called Aspergers Syndrome. Charles "Chinese" Gordon was somewhat eccentric. He was Christian-Evangelist, but believed in reincarnation. He didn't seem to have a need for money and spent most of his on the sick, old and youth of his community, as well as helping those where he traveled. His military career lasted from 1852 until his death in 1885. Gordon graduated from the Royal Military Academy and served in the Crimean War; Second Opium War and Taiping Rebellion in China; and the Mahdist War at the Seige of Khartoum. I would have liked to have seen more of the book describing his many interesting military exploits. Gordon's life, however, was more than can be portrayed in this book. It was best summarized in the May 1892 edition of the Strand Magazine which stated "And so, in the hearts of the people of the Soudan, Gorden Pasha still lives. Winds carry across the desert the scent of the roses that he planted, and that drop their fragrant leaves near where his blood was shed. And to the eastern country for whose sake he died, and to our own land for whose honour his life was given, he has left a memory that must be like the roses--forever fragrant, and for ever sweet."

Enjoyed book very much.
the book was engaging. I can see many people reading through the lens of their 21st century biases getting upset. The work is not analytical or critical. still a good read and good information
